Natural Disasters – Using the Present Perfect

In this worksheet you will read and talk about natural disasters like floods, storms and earthquakes. You will practise how to use the present perfect to speak about experiences and results in the present (for example: “I have never seen a tornado” or “The river has flooded the streets”). The tasks help you understand short texts, build useful vocabulary, and talk and write about real events and your own experiences in a clear and safe way.

Text:

Last winter, Lisa sat in her classroom in Salzburg. The teacher showed a video about natural disasters. First, the students saw a strong earthquake in Japan. Buildings shook, cars moved from side to side, and people ran into the streets. Lisa felt afraid, but also curious. Could something like that happen in Austria? The teacher explained that earthquakes, floods, storms, and wildfires are all natural disasters. They happen when nature suddenly becomes dangerous. In Austria, very strong earthquakes are rare, but smaller ones sometimes happen. However, heavy rain and floods are a real problem. Rivers can rise quickly and streets can fill with water. Lisa remembered a summer holiday in Carinthia. It rained for three days without a break. The river near her grandparents’ house became brown and wild. The water almost reached the garden. Firefighters came and put sandbags along the river. Neighbours helped each other and carried furniture to the first floor. Lisa was scared, but she also saw how people worked together. At school, the class made an emergency plan. They learned what to put in an emergency backpack: water, snacks, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a phone charger. They also practiced what to do if a disaster happens: stay calm, listen to adults, and follow instructions. Lisa still worries sometimes, but now she feels better prepared and knows that teamwork can save lives.
